Ruínas do Sítio Humaitá (Humaita Site Ruins)

Tijuca’s National Park is divided into three visiting sections - Forest, Serra da Carioca e Pedra Bonita/Pedra da Gávea - and offers activities options for everyone, from picnic and barbecue area to hang gliding, climbing, trail, and others. Forest Section is a vast and important green area right in the heart of the city. Also known as Tijuca’s Forest, there’s a bunch of nature and recreation areas to enjoy the day with family and friends. It’s also here that concentrates an infinity of trails to all publics, there are two main circuits and a share of the biggest urban trail: the Transcarioca. The Ruínas do Sítio Humaitá (Humaita's Site Ruins) was bought in 1850 by the Baron of Bom Retiro for his only son, who lived there for a few years. When the Paraguayan War broke out, Bom Retiro's son enlisted, went off to fight, and died in the Battle of Humaitá. The episode deeply affected the Baron, who, in honor of his son, managed to change the name of the farm, already expropriated for reforestation.
