Catete Palace – Republic Museum

Built between 1858 and 1867, the palace was built as the residence of family of Baron of Nova Friburgo, in the then capital of the Empire of Brazil. Located in Catete district, the building is distinguished by five bronze condors on its eaves and sumptuous halls.
The museum has a good collection of art and artifacts from the Republican period. Some rooms are used as art gallery with temporary expositions. The most remarkable historical event happened in the palace halls was president Getúlio Vargas' suicide, in 1954. The 3rd-floor bedroom in which the suicide occurred is well preserved.
