Originally "Praça Floriano Peixoto", Cinelândia Square is located dowtntown. Its byname got popular in 1930, for having a lot of cinemas and an exciting cultural life at that moment it got this name.
At that time, there was a modernization project for the city center that had as goal to follow the urban pattern inspired in Paris, with boulevards and buildings in Neoclassical and Art Nouveau style. A few examples at Cinelândia are Palácio Pedro Ernesto , Biblioteca Nacional, Museu Nacional de Belas Artes e o Cinema Odeon (the only survivor from the street cinemas times), Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (a building also known as Amarelinho), and Theatro Municipal.
